Local Salon Hosts Cut-a-Thon for a Cause

Haircuts for a Cause
Jennifer Ramos, Artistic & Educational Director and Senior Stylist at Nube Nove recently hosted a cut-a-thon at the Thornton Park salon to raise awareness and funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Her son Simon, 12, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he was just five years old.
So what is a cut-a-thon? In Jennifer's words, it's "is a great way for us as stylists to donate our time and talent and turn it into funds for an awesome cause." Nube Nove accepted donations of $20 for adult haircuts and $10 donations for childrens' haircuts with proceeds benefiting Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. It's a win-win situation: a great haircut to benefit an even greater cause.

The Inspiration
Jennifer was inspired to organize the cut-a-thon by witnessing firsthand the trials and tribulations her son endures daily. "People say, 'oh, you can just take medicine for diabetes; it's not that bad,'" she says. "I always say to them: if you lived in a Type 1 diabetic's shoe for one day, you'd think differently!"
Her son Simon told our reporter that he must test himself several times a day with painful shots and pricks just to make sure his blood sugar level is balanced. "It's like living on medication...it makes me angry," he says.
When asked about what he felt about the cut-a-thon his mother organized to raise money for the JDRF, he's all for it. "It's an excellent idea. It makes me happy to look into the future and know scientists will one day find a cure."
Jennifer remains optimistic about the future and says she will never give up fighting for a cure for her son and others like him. "I will do all I can to raise money to fund the doctors to continue the search for a cure. I know in my heart they will find a cure in his lifetime."
