A Microwave Powered by... Your Laptop?
Yeah, that's right! Heinz has partnered up with some folks to make the world's smallest microwave. The coolest part is you power it from a USB port. This awkward turquoise colored microwave -- being called the "Beanzawave" is perfect for those tied down to their desks and want warm snacks or hot beverages. As of now, the device is only a prototype, but the technology exists where we could be seeing this on the shelves soon.
The key to the Beazawave's technology is its ability to combine mobile phone radio frequencies to create the heat needed. Some things can take less than a minute to cook thoroughly.
Gordon Andrews, managing director of GAMA Microwave Technology, quoted that it was possible to 'tune' frequencies to provide the best results with any small product.
"It is possible to heat a pie, a burger, a cup of soup, or tea in quick time," says Andrews. There is also an option to power the device with batteries, making it completely portable.
Oh, and don't worry -- this mini-nuker conforms to all the standard safety guidelines. It has insulated protective walls and a mechanism on the door to stop when you pop open the door. There are more standards, but I'm not exactly a microwave expert. Although...I can make one mean Hot Pocket!
The Beanzawave is looking at a price tag of around $150-$200, but hopefully, cost of production will fall so it can be made cheaper and more affordable.
Honestly, I think a product like this is a bit over the line. Yet there seems to be a market for it. I'm also hoping there will be a name change and some color options. That turquoise is an eyesore. Ouch!
