Local artist Scott Scheidly's work will be on display at the Bold Hype Gallery through July 13.

The Interview: Scott Scheidly

1. What influences your art?
Music, dreams, art and pretty much everything else I come in contact with.

2. How do you create a piece of art? Does an idea come to you all at once, or does it usually go through variations?
Most my ideas come to me when I'm stuck between sleep states. My mind never stops and works best at this time. I start with a main character, then start adding things to it for balance and an overall good composition. As I work on a piece of art it's always changing. It almost never ends the way it started and the problem solving is what keeps me involved with the piece

3. What's with the lack of noses?
The last couple years I changed styles many times trying to find my identity or niche. I became so frustrated that I decided to start over from scratch even though I knew it was going to be a long process. So I thought back to what artistic things I did as a kid. The one thing I remember enjoying most was taking my mom's magazines cutting up the images of people then pasting the bodies back together in weird ways. Putting big heads on small bodies and vice versa. So I took a magazine and stared cutting away. I cut a face in half and dropped it down losing the nose and really liked the look. The rest is history, as they say, and the long process I thought was in front of me only took less than an hour.

4. Why live in Florida?
I'm skinny and hate the cold.

5. What do you like most about being an artist?
No rules and getting out of bed when I want.

Katie's Review

Scott Scheidly's art consists of strange landscapes, nature oddities, and beautiful women without noses. Everything is distorted and subtly disturbing. Besides the occasional pop culture reference, the Bold Hype is a multitude of mushrooms and those noseless women. This makes his art fascinating, if also a little uncomfortable. Don't miss the opportunity to take in Scott's eclectic art!
